BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Recreation Department, Recreation Commission and the Board of Education have provided the following update to help residents understand which public recreation facilities are currently open and if there are restrictions in place.

As a result of COVID-19, restrictions and guidelines have been put in place by the NJ Department Of Health and must be followed. As the state guidelines change, availability of facilities in Berkeley Heights will adjust accordingly.  As a reminder, all activity should abide by social distancing guidelines.

As of Monday, June 22, 2020, the status of the fields, courts and playgrounds in Berkeley Heights is as follows:

  • Fields
    • All fields including the GL track are open (County, Township and BOE)

    • Fields must be reserved via the Google Form 

    • Groups should not be using the fields without a reservation.

  • Tennis courts

    • Tennis courts are open for singles and doubles.  

    • Tennis permits must be obtained on Community Pass. Information and registration for the Town Tennis program are online

  • Basketball courts

    • Basketball courts are only open for individual “shooting around” and are not open for games (such as 5v5) or any other activity where social distancing is not possible.  

  • Playgrounds

    • Playgrounds are not open and should not be used.

Fields, courts and playgrounds in Berkeley Heights are owned and maintained in combination by Union County, Berkeley Heights Township, and the Board of Education.  Guidelines change frequently and are not determined by the Township. Residents are asked to check for updates on the Township website. As guidelines adjusts, the County, Township and BOE will reopen facilities.
