Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic on Freddie Mercury and Queen’s journey to fame came out in early November of 2018. It immediately was a smash hit. I saw it a few weeks after it came out and twice after that, and my first opinion was, WOW! The movie has a wonderful cast and an awesome storyline. It keeps the rock and fun of the band and their lives, and doesn’t over use Freddie’s health struggles, but doesn’t ignore them either. It is an immensely enjoyable movie even for those who do not like Queen. It was a beautiful, fun movie that quickly became a favorite for me and many other people. Junior Aly Hagen raved about the movie saying, “Bohemian Rhapsody was amazing! I grew up listening to Queen and so I was jamming out to all of the songs the entire time! I thought it was so cool how they played the live versions of the songs that were actually played at the concerts they recreated. I thought that Rami Malek did a great job of portraying Freddie Mercury in all his glory. It was a great movie and I actually saw it twice because I love it that much lol!!” The movie did a great job showing what the band went through and recreating their performances and concerts.
Bohemian Rhapsody received many nominations this season. It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, and many more categories. Rami Malek, the actor who portrayed Freddie, was astonishing. He completely took on the role and had the audience genuinely believing that he was Freddie. He went above and beyond for the role. He even wore fake teeth to get Freddie’s famous buck teeth. The story is inspiring, uplifting, and heartwarming. It shows all the best parts of Freddie’s story while also shining light on the harder issues, such as his battle with AIDS and the criticism and questions that he got about his sexuality. Freddie got sick when AIDS was a new thing and there was not much that you could do to help the disease.
The film shines light on the tension between Freddie and the rest of the group at different moments. Freddie’s personality was more flamboyant and open in contrast to his band members who were more private and went on to marry and have families. They also often disagreed with a manager Freddie had named Paul who never really looked out for Freddie’s best interests and led him down dark paths. Sophomore Erin Dindial stated that, “I thought the movie was good, it was interesting to learn about Freddie Mercury’s backstory, and the songs were really great”.
Bohemian Rhapsody was a fun and entertaining film that showed all the excitement of being in a rock band while shining light on the struggles that come with it. The film informed us about new secrets we hadn’t known about the band and Freddie. Along with filling our minds with the wonderful hit songs that will stay stuck in our heads and hearts forever.
