ROSELLE, NJ - GL Varsity hockey team lost their home opener to Montclair, 3-1, on Monday night at Warinanco. Despite an early Ryan Erickson goal, GL fell late to the now 2-1 Mounties. Although the score was close throughout the game, a Montclair open net goal put the game out of reach for the Highlanders.

GL’s Senior captain Ryan Erickson scored his first goal of the year in the closing minutes of the first period. However, AJ Nintzel scored a back-door goal to even the game for Montclair. With 2:29 left in the third period, Brett Janifer scored from the slot to give Montclair a 2-1 lead. In the last minute of play, GL coach Mike Cristiello pulled the goalie to give his team six attackers. After a barrage of shots, Montclair was able to tap the puck into GL’s empty net to put the game away.

Despite the score, GL showed fight against another tough McInnis opponent. Highlander seniors were able play hard and set an example of determination and fight for the underclassmen. Goalie Nick Papa played well, stopping roughly 40 Montclair shots.

GL’s next game will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Warinanco where the Highlanders look to top the Summit Hilltoppers for the first time in team history.
