An American classic, this stirring “choreopoem” weaves together 20 separate poems with music, movement and narratives to tell the stories of love, empowerment, and struggle and loss in a complex representation of sisterhood. The cast consists of seven nameless African-American women only identified by the colors they are assigned. Shange wrote for colored girls... in a way that mimicked how real women spoke so she could draw her readers' focus to the experience of reading and listening. The show was nominated for a Tony Award in 1976.
4th Wall’s “Off The Wall” production will not be fully produced with sets and costumes, and the performers will/can carry scripts. The characters will be fully drawn, and the storytelling will be the focus of the production. There will be some staging. The show will be followed by a brief discussion.
