BELMAR, NJ — There will be plenty of high-seas adventures in Belmar on Sunday, June 25 when its first-ever Pirate Walk will take over the borough’s central shopping district.
The Belmar Business Partnership is sponsoring the swashbuckling event, which will feature pirate re-enactments and entertainment, a free gift auction for those dressed as pirates and wenches, and a treasure chest hunt for pirates under age 10.
The mayhem and merriment will be led by two regionally recognized pirate troupes — the Valhallas Pirates, which has been “plundering the eastern shores of the American colonies” with its lively re-enactments, and the Sea Dogs, a musical group that offers performances of traditional sea shanties and other whimsical songs of the sea.
“We are extremely pleased to have these two popular groups give us a glimpse into the golden age of piracy in quite an enjoyable and engaging way,” said event coordinator Pat Tecza, a Belmar Business Partnership member. “This is the first year of what we hope will become an annual event for landlubbers and salty dogs of all ages.”
Tecza’s store — Nostalgic Nonsense Vintage Clothing at 903 Main Street — and several dozen other businesses in Belmar’s central shopping district will be participating in the afternoon of pirate fun.
Kate Walters of Sweet Tease Café & Bakery has been organizing a free gift auction that features more than 20 prizes, including:
- A “pirates and princesses” party for 10 children at Sweet Tease Café & Bakery at 604 Main Street.
- An Igloo cooler, two aluminum beverage mugs and a $50 gift card from West Marine at 825 Belmar Plaza.
- A “beach bum” gift package that contains a beach chair from Taylor’s Hardware at 914 Main Street and two Belmar beach badges.
The event, to be held rain or shine, kicks off at noon with free registration outside Socialitize, 700 Belmar Plaza. Look for the skull-and-crossbones logo in participating businesses.
