In her new book, Empowered Design: A Design Plan for Living, Garcia tells her own personal story with a refreshing honesty and an abundant awareness of life's challenges.

Sharing stories in her quest to follow her passions in life, she created an empowered design plan for living. Visualization, goal setting, internal dialogue, clearing out the mental and physical clutter - all to develop her Passion Plan Book.

Garcia is committed to sharing her experiences: “Empowered Design is about creating the life you are meant to live starting from the inside out."

The brunch will provide an intimate setting to hear from Blanche first-hand - readings from her book, stories about what led her to write one - sharing lessons of strength and persistence.

Garcia felt strongly about using the launch of her book as a platform to build awareness for a local non-profit: “I relate to the work of S.O.F.I.A. because I know what it feels like to want a better life, but not have the tools to get there. We share the belief that when you empower those with the tools they need, then you are giving them a fighting chance to succeed.”

Cynthia Walker, Founder and Executive Director of S.O.F.I.A., on the importance of community involvement: ”Community involvement continues to bring awareness to the on-going need to eradicate domestic violence. Join the movement to help empower our youth by educating them on the value of a healthy relationship. Become an advocate today.”

S.O.F.I.A. - Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that provides advocacy, supportive services and referrals for temporary housing to “at risk” women and children affected by domestic violence.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
