Bloomfield, NJ- On October 30, 2019, at approximately 1636 hours, a report of an armed robbery was reported from the Sunoco gas station located at 72 Bloomfield Ave, Bloomfield, NJ. The suspect entered the Sunoco and brandished a black colored handgun at the store attendant while demanding the money from the store register. The store clerk turned over $1696 in cash to the suspect who then fled the store. 

The suspect was described as an African American male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and brown pants. Officers Jen Horn and Georgeo Antinori responded to the area and were able to locate a party matching that description on Abington Avenue near North 11th St in the City of Newark. 

Once the party was stopped and secured, Officer Thomas Lutz located a white plastic Sunoco bag with U.S. currency. Officers at the scene of the Sunoco confirmed that the proceeds were in a white plastic bag. Officer Matthew Mazzolla located a black handgun, which had been tossed behind bushes in the area of Abington Avenue and N. 13th Street.

The suspect was later identified as Mickens J. Meranville, 18 years of age from East Orange, NJ. He was placed under arrest and transported to Bloomfield PD headquarters. He was charged with Robbery 2C:15-1a, Unlawful possession of a weapon 2C:39-5b (1), Possession of a weapon for unlawful Purposes 2C:39-4a (1), and 3 counts of Aggravated Assault 2C:12-1b (4). 

“I would like to commend the quick action of responding officers to the scene of the robbery and accurate information given by the store attendant. This information assisted in locating the suspect quickly and apprehending an offender and the weapon used,” said Public Safety Director Samuel DeMaio.
