CRANBURY, NJ – Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that injured a 13-year-old girl and killed her pet dog Wednesday night on South Main Street near Evans Drive, according to Police Chief Rickey Varga.
According to Varga, the township girl was crossing South Main Street with her dog around 6:18 p.m. when a light-colored SUV hit her and the dog.
Varga said the SUV driver did not stop to render aid to the girl following the impact and fled the scene, heading north on Main Street.
The girl and her pet were in the crosswalk near Evans Drive when she was hit, Varga said.
She is not being identified because she is a juvenile, he said.
Cranbury Police, Cranbury Volunteer Fire Company, and Cranbury First Aid Squad all responded to the scene, and the girl was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick with non-life threatening injuries, he said.
According to Varga, her dog did not survive the impact.
Police are looking for an older model Ford Explorer or similar type vehicle, possibly a champagne or silver color, that was heading north on Main Street around the time of the crash, he said.
Varga said vehicles matching this description that were seen in the vicinity of Route 130 or Plainsboro Road around this time are also of interest, as the driver may have headed in the direction of either as they fled the scene.
Chief Varga said there were several witnesses to the accident and the interviewing process is ongoing.
A message board will be put up at the scene of the crash within the next couple of days to obtain as much information from the public as possible.
“It won't be easy, but we're determined to look under every rock,” Chief Varga said. “We'd really like to find this person.”
To that end, police are asking residents on North Main Street or Plainsboro Road with surveillance cameras that captured traffic images between 6:10 and 6:30 p.m. last night to call the department at (609) 395-0031.
