BLOOMFIELD, NJ--With the game scrimmage just a day away and the regular season opener set for Oct. 2, the Bloomfield High football team has been getting in some quality practice time.

Head coach Mike Carter begins his 30th season at the helm of the Bengals. Bloomfield will visit Belleville High, on Sept. 24, for the only scrimmage of the season. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. The regular season begins on Oct. 2, when Montclair visits Foley Field at 7 p.m. On Oct. 9, the Bengals stay home to play West Orange, at 7, and the first road game is on Oct. 16, at Passaic, also at 7.

Carter has been pleased with his team's performance in practice.

"We're getting a lot of good work in," said Carter. "They're working hard, and as coaches, that's all we can ask of them. The attitude is great. They just want to be on the field, with their teammates, and are excited about the season."

Carter also named team captains for 2020. They are seniors Darrell Dunn, Dan Nichol, Jeanty Saladin, Jarek Terrell, Adam Vega, Kwesi Wilson, and junior Jaden Adkins. Dunn will play running back and linebacker, Nichol is a lineman, Saladin will play tight end and linebacker, Terrell is a linebacker, Vega is a defensive back and running back, Wilson will be a two-way lineman and Adkins is a linebacker.

Adkins' ascension to a captain as a junior was quite a leap.

"He deserves it," said Carter of Adkins. "His leadership skills are outstanding. Honestly, when he stepped on the field, as a sophomore last year, I could see he was ready to be a captain then."

At a recent practice, Carter welcomed Montclair State's head coach, Rick Giancola, to speak to the team.

"It was great having Coach Giancola speak to our kids," said Carter. "Talk about a wealth of knowledge? His career speaks for itself. He runs a great program and I was so happy he spent some time with our team. I know our guys really enjoyed it, and they learned something about what it takes to be successful at the next level."
