EAST ORANGE, NJ - The East Orange Housing Authority (EOHA) took time during their attendance last week at the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials NAHRO Convention to take part in "NAHRO on Capital Hill".
This was an initiative where the agencies in attendance went to Capitol Hill to speak to their respective Senators and Congressional leaders to express the negative impact the proposed six (6) billion dollar budget cut to HUD will have on the quality of life of our residents in East Orange and across the nation.
Acting almost like a military squadron, the EOHA Advocacy Squad is led by First Commanding Advocate Wilbert Gill, EOHA Executive Director and Elena D. Coley, Director of Operations as second in command. The "Squad" has strong supporting advocacy reinforcements that include Fred Shaw, EOHA Board of Commissioner Chair; Wanda Watson, EOHA Board of Commissioner & Treasurer; and Louis Waters, EOHA Board of Commissioner Member.
The budget cuts proposed could create homelessness for more than 200,000 individuals, families, seniors, individuals with disabilities and additional underserved populations.
The EOHA Advocacy Squad expressed that they will ‘continue to advocate and fight against the budget cuts to ensure the needs our residents are met by providing decent, safe, sanitary and affordable housing’.
