BLOOMFIELD, NJ - A Bloomfield Police Officer was involved in a shooting on Greenbrook Drive this morning, according to town officials and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Leroy Frank, 60, was shot and killed by a Bloomfield police officer on Friday after he lunged with a knife at another officer, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly said in a statement. Frank was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Fennelly and Bloomfield Director of Public Safety Samuel DeMaio, officers arrived at the Greenbrook Drive residence for a domestic abuse complaint when they saw a woman with a stab wound to the neck.
DeMaio said police entered the home when they made multiple attempts to get Frank to drop the knife. However, the man reached towards an officer with the knife, leading to a second officer shooting him.
The woman is Frank's estranged wife, according to Fennelly's statement.
The Essex County Prosecutors Office is currently investigating the shooting, as required by the New Jersey Attorney General's guidelines for police involved shootings.
