BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Repair work that began last month has been completed at Clarks Pond South and Vassar Field, resulting in resurfaced, level basketball courts with substantial upgrades. The Clarks Pond South basketball courts received new breakaway rims, and new, energy efficient LED lighting has been purchased and will be installed by the Township Department of Public Works in the near future. Additionally, a memorial bench area dedicated to the late Carol Alves-Ward, with brick pavers and a shade tree, has been completed.

The Vassar Field basketball courts were also resurfaced and equipped with new poles, glass backboards and rims which are adjustable and can be lowered down to seven feet. Like the Clarks Pond South courts, the Vassar Field courts received a new flat playing surface, with blue and green paint along with white basketball court lines. These improvements were funded by the Recreation Department’s Capital Improvement fund and cost $71,700. Montclair-based DiMilia Inc. was awarded the contract to repair cracks and fill low lying spots so they do not hold water, as well as repaint the surfaces with new colors, and install new breakaway rims and backboards.

“Bloomfield is home to some of the best County and Municipal parks in the State, and our Parks and Recreation Department works very hard to listen to residents' concerns and make as many improvements to our facilities as possible,” said Mayor Michael Venezia. “These entirely new basketball courts are safer and more enjoyable for players of all ages and skillsets, and will remain so for many years.”

“I am very proud to bring these upgrades to both Clarks Pond South and Vassar Field basketball courts. With the recent upgrades to Pulaski Park and Felton Field, now every basketball court in the municipal park system has been upgraded,” said Director of Parks & Recreation Michael Sceurman.

All of the Township parks in Bloomfield are open seven days per week, from 7:30 a.m. to dusk. However, specific areas of play like baseball fields, softball fields, tennis courts and basketball court with designated athletic lighting are open until 10:00 p.m. LED lighting installed last month at Clarks Pond South tennis courts has been extremely well received.
