BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Labor Day was created by Congress to celebrate the American worker, here in New Jersey, the holiday is a celebration for everyone getting ready for all kinds of work including school work, teachers getting in one last weekend of fun, Italian grandmothers gathering the family to make vat after vat of sauce, and everyone else showing off their barbecue skills. Each of these celebrations calls for raising a glass and making a toast. Bloomfield's BuyRite Wine and Liquor knows exactly what to pair with your celebration.

Located directly across from the train station in Bloomfield Center, BuyRite is much bigger on the inside than their street front would suggest. The family owned business has row after row of the libations needed for any celebration, with options to fit any budget. From high end Scotch, to the ideal Champagne for asking 'the question,' to cases of beer for a backyard celebration, its all there.

The first surprise was the 14 tap growler station located to the left of the entrance. The station features favorites from local craft brewers allowing customers to celebrate the pride of the Garden State as they celebrate this, and any weekend. Growlers are available for purchase, or customers can refill their own. Standouts include the Rogue Hazenutey Chocfabulous based on a Stout and WineShine by Magnify with its kick of citrus. Growlers are available in 30 oz. and 64 oz. sizes.

For those customers whose tradition includes a cooler filled with beer on ice, BuyRite has an extensive selection of beer both in cases and refrigerated six packs. The selection includes the national brands everyone knows as well as craft brewers and seasonal offerings.

But its not just about beer, Meenu Sharma, one of the managers at Bloomfield BuyRite can pair wines and spirits with any food or occasion. When we met she spoke extensively about Rose's. "Rose's are good in general, they are crisp and fruity ... and easy to sip on." They pair very well with simple salads. When it comes to burgers, she suggested Spanish reds as well as California reds. "Coliseum,' a Spanish red is easy to drink with noticeable tannins, but not heavy tannins, its light texture makes it a good choice for burgers as well as pizza. At $7.99, consider 'Calia' Malbac. Sharma described it as "very light on the palette."

Of note is the selection of organic and vegan wines. Most people assume that all wine is vegan as it is based on fruit, however depending on the vineyard, the filtering material used to make the perfect bottle may not be vegan, hence the specially labeled vegan wine section.

A lot of people are going to unoaked chardonnay right now. With the change in weather taking place this week, there will be some noticeable trends in customers preferences. Spike seltzers are still a very popular item right now as an everyday beverage. Hard Ciders are in stock and will be in greater demand as the weather continues to change. Sharma told TAPinto Bloomfield that "everyone is into ginger beers this year."

Owner Chanden Dhir, known to everyone as 'Rocky' told us about the BuyRite APP and delivery. For a flat $5 charge, his team will deliver to Bloomfield, Montclair, Glen Ridge, Nutley, Verona, the Oranges, Clifton, and Belleville. Customers can make their selection on  or via the BuyRite APP. Dhir stressed that the person receiving the order must be over 21, must have positive identification, and the name on the identification must match the credit card being used. The minimum order for delivery is $25.

The location also offers club pricing, The store features regular pricing, sale pricing, and club pricing. Recently, 'The Specialist' had a regular retail price of $15.99, a sale price of $13.99, and a club price of $11.99. Sharma told us that the club is "just sign up" and "we don't bombard customers with emails and mailings. Sign up for the club on

When visiting, take not of the video screens featuring cocktail recipes. Instead of fumbling with old fashioned recipe cards, customes can focus on purchasing what they need, and have the recipe sent electronically to their phone or email. Cheers!

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
