MAHOPAC, N.Y.— If you have about $15 million to spare, you can own the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home, which comes with its own island, on Lake Mahopac.

The iconic home, once rumored to have been purchased by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (those rumors were false), is back on the market with a selling price of $14,920,000.

The sale is being handled by high-end real estate brokers Chilton & Chadwick.

“This is simply one of the most magnificent properties in the New York metropolitan area,” the firm states on its website.

The island, known as Petra Island (or Petre), is an 11-acre, heart-shaped private island. The 6,000-plus square-foot home boasts seven bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms and a guest house. It doesn’t end there. It also has a tea house, dock and a helipad on the roof, room for a pool, tennis court and whatever else the new owner might wish to build.

The listing on the Chilton & Chadwick website states, “It sits magnificently in the middle of Lake Mahopac, and is only a 15-minute helicopter ride from Manhattan or a four-and-a-half-minute helicopter ride from Westchester County Airport. There really isn’t anything quite like Petra Island. It is an ideal family retreat—a true oasis.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that the house came on the market over the summer. The concrete house was built a decade ago with protruding stones and copper paneling on a site selected by Wright in about 1950. It includes a man-made pond of rushing water and behind it a small hilltop forest of trees more than 100 years old. The house was built in 2007, based on Wright’s half-century-old drawings by Joseph Massaro, a former sheet-metal contractor and the island’s current owner.

An architect worked on a larger house on the island but the project was put on the back burner until Massaro resumed it 17 years ago. He built what he thought was an authentic creation of the home Wright intended to build, but his work led to a squabble with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. After a lawsuit, the settlement allowed Massaro to move forward with the project, but he agreed to describe it as a house “inspired by” Frank Lloyd Wright.

Chadwick Ciocci, of Chilton & Chadwick, told The Wall Street Journal that “the listing was a challenge, even though it was properly priced. The link to Frank Lloyd Wright should be a lure.”

Ciocci told the newspaper that several showings were scheduled over the summer, including with two potential buyers vacationing in the south of France and at least one Manhattan billionaire.
