LAKE COMO, NJ — The New York City firefighter charged with criminal mischief and defiant trespass for vomiting and defecating in an 18th Avenue backyard in June was fined $4,000 after pleading guilty to violating Lake Como's noise and littering ordinances.
Joseph Cassano appeared in Belmar Municipal Court on July 10 — a month after his arrest on June 10 when he was found by the homeowner asleep inside his garage, in addition to leaving the mess on the outdoor patio and patio furniture. There were also shoes, a cell phone and a soiled pair of shorts on the patio.
According to the police report, the sleeping Cassano, 28, was in soiled underwear, appeared confused and could not remember any details leading him to this location, which is situated in walking distance of several bars frequented by summer visitors to this seashore town.
Cassano is a probationary firefighter with the New York Fire Department in Staten Island and son of former New York Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano. He recently returned to work after a 30-day suspension was ordered after the incident, according to reports.
