Park Street Academy (PSA), a private pre-school and kindergarten, and Montclair B.A.B.Y. have collaborated to introduce yoga to PSA students as part of afternoon enrichment programming.

Montclair B.A.B.Y. is a center dedicated to supporting the well-being of expectant moms, new parents, and their families. This partnership will help students learn to calm the mind, spark creativity and imagination, and provide tools for stress management and impulse control.

Throughout the school year, PSA offers students the opportunity to experience a variety of extracurricular activities, from basketball and tennis to tap dancing and yoga. This type of programming is fun for the kids and has been shown to facilitate learning and academic performance.  Yoga, in particular, enhances body awareness, encourages kind social interactions, and teaches the value of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

“Through this partnership, the children are able to participate in an activity that builds gross motor skills, concentration, and relaxation – but it's made fun and interactive,” says Lisa Raphael, Director of Park Street Academy. “A lot of our students were familiar with yoga poses that we’ve incorporated into the classroom, but Montclair B.A.B.Y. has brought it to a whole new level.”

In class, Jayana Desai, a certified children’s yoga instructor, helps the students find their best form of expression through yoga activities. PSA students are challenged to use their mind, body, and spirit when engaging in poses and guided meditations.  As in ‘adult’ yoga, Desai leads her practitioners through a variety of poses including tree pose, warrior, downward dog and – of course – child’s pose.  The children also experience yoga through a number of other activities including songs, games and yoga adventures.

“This class helps children begin to learn about relaxation at an early age.  Their lives – and ours – are so busy these days.  The practice of yoga can teach them how to better connect with each other, their families and their environment,” explains Kelli DeFlora, Founder and Director of Montclair B.A.B.Y.

Many expectant and new mothers turn to yoga to find a network of support early in their children’s lives, and this partnership between PSA and Montclair B.A.B.Y. is a great opportunity for students and their families to continue to connect with the yoga community.
