NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ,  - TAPinto.net is pleased to announce that the Plainfield YMCA has franchised its Plainfield, NJ site under the leadership of Editor Jennifer Popper and Marketing Manager at the YMCA, Carolyn Wellington.  The site covers original local news in Plainfield, NJ in Union County.

Jennifer has lived in Plainfield since 2002, in the Netherwood Heights section of town. She has served on the Board of the Netherwood Heights Neighbors association as both President and Vice President, and still acts as Communications Director. She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in TV, Radio and Film Management and has spent her career in publishing working at titles such as Golf Digest, Rolling Stone, Ladies' Home Journal, Parenting, and TV Guide Magazine.

Jennifer loves the outdoors, and will be walking 450 miles from New Jersey to Maine (to honor her husband's memory) along the East Coast Greenway in the summer of 2018.

She said, "I didn't know anything about Plainfield, but my husband insisted on looking at houses here.  I'm so glad he did.  There are so many wonderful people who live here, who open their homes to others.  These neighbors have been there for me through good times and a particularly bad time when I lost my husband in 2016, and I couldn't imagine living away from them anywhere else."

She continued, "When the Plainfield YMCA approached me with this opportunity, I was immediately intrigued about immersing myself in the digital world.  I haven't been disappointed, and have enjoyed engaging with a vast number of residents, business owners, and city officials."

Carolyn Wellington has been a resident of Plainfield for 10 years after relocating from the Northern Virginia area. She is married with one child. She currently serves as Marketing Manager at the Plainfeld YMCA. She received her BA from the University of Virginia and her MBA from George Washington University. She previously worked in Real Estate Finance and Management Consulting with Ernst & Young, Freddie Mac and other financial institutions.

She said, "The Plainfield YMCA was challenged with thinking outside the box to develop new ways to market its programs and create new revenue streams. After being introduced to TAPinto they decided to purchase the TAPinto Plainfield franchise. It's a wonderful opportunity to become more immersed in the community and promote the positive aspects of Plainfield."

TAPinto CEO and Publisher Michael Shapiro said, "We are especially excited by the Plainfield YMCA franchising our Plainfield site, the first time a nonprofit has franchised a TAPinto site.  At a time when local newspapers, particularly in distressed and rural areas, are going out of business or are nonexistent, and nonprofits are struggling to raise needed funds, a nonprofit franchising a TAPinto site creates not only a wonderful resource for its community but new revenue streams for the nonprofit, enabling both the nonprofit and the newspaper to flourish.  Through the hard work and dedication of Jennifer and Carolyn, the Plainfield site is already becoming a model for nonprofits throughout the country to consider."

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
