MORRISTOWN, NJ - Despite Wednesday’s massive snowstorm, thousands of Morris County residents still ventured out into the snowy streets for this year’s Morris County St. Patrick’s Day parade. Starting at the Morristown Municipal Building and traveling down South Street to the Morristown Green, locals gathered, dressed in their festive green attire, to watch bagpipers, Irish Step Dancers and other Irish inspired floats parade down the streets. Many local bars and restaurants in the area also opened their doors for anyone wishing to have a drink or some lunch while they enjoyed the parade.

Prior to the start of the parade, Irish Dancers from the Heritage Irish Dance Company, gathered to warm up and practice their parade routine. Eighteen year old Shannon Karlok, who has been dancing since she was three, has been performing in the parade for years and was excited to be dancing again this year.

“I enjoy performing at the parade even more than competing,” said Karlok. “It really gives us the opportunity to really be ourselves.”

She also explained that each year, the dancers practice a routine that has been specifically choreographed for the parade, which they practice during special classes prior to the event.

This year’s parade Grand Marshall was John Murphy who led the parade accompanied by a green firetruck. Other Morris County business and organizations marched in the parade included Morristown Medical Center, The Madison Hotel and The Red Dog Tavern. Numerous first responders and other organizations such as the Knights of Columbus also attended.

Megan Niedzinski, who is a nanny to four children and attended the parade this year with them, said that the Morris County St. Patrick’s Day parade is attended by so many people because Morristown is such a vibrant and exciting town.

“It is just such a fun scene here,” she said.

Other locals who gathered outside local bars mentioned that they were thankful that although there was a lot of snow on the sidewalks this year, they were thankful that it was far warmer than last year’s parade.

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
