NUTLEY, NJ - The Nutley Chamber of Commerce's 20th Annual 5K Fun Run and Kids Fun Run is slated for Sunday, May 6, 2018, 8:00 am at the Park Oval on Franklin Avenue. The proceeds will be donated to support local veterans..
A springtime township tradition takes on added significance as it reaches a notable milestone this year. The popular event, which began in 1999, attracts more than 300 runners from across the Northeast who then trek 3.1 miles around town.
“This year, the 5K will be dedicated to our veterans who have sacrificed their time, and some their lives, for the benefit of our freedom and way of life,” said Daniel Leon, President of Nutley Chamber since 2014.
Mike Zippo, a local business owner since 1974 and chamber member for over 20 years, has served as director of the 5K since its inception. Zippo previously competed in the New York City Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon and Philadelphia Marathon.
“I have been running for a long time and participated in many weekend racing events, so we thought it would be a good idea to start the 5K to bring visitors to town to come and enjoy the great atmosphere of Nutley,“ said Zippo.
The chamber’s goal is to help support the community with the event proceeds each year to benefit a local charitable or civic organization. “Our 5K has been a staple of Nutley for 20 years,” Leon added. “It brings people from all over New Jersey and surrounding states to experience the run and to see what other perks Nutley has to offer.”
The chamber board will determine in the coming weeks which veteran’s group will receive the proceeds. Last year, profits from the 5K were donated to Nutley Special Young Adults and The Phoenix Center.
“We have supported many causes and I think on our 20th anniversary, nothing could be better than for us to honor our veterans,” said Zippo. “It’s great to see people come out along the race route to root for their family members and friends.”
Established in 1953, Nutley Chamber represents businesses, professionals and organizations who work together to promote the economic development of the township. Nutley has one of the largest single municipality chambers in the state.
Zippo is very enthusiastic about the turnout expected for the 20th installment of the run, stating, “whether you run or whether you walk, it’s a great family day in our township.”
