Steeplechasing: No Worries For Worried Man in Va.; Doc Cebu continues streak at Genesee Valley

Genesee Valley Hunt Races History Credits: Livingston County NY Tourism

On an autumn afternoon that featured horses racing over timber fences, Four Virginia Gents' Worried Man took the lead in mid-stretch and went on to a 1-3/4-length win in the $40,000 Sporting Library and Museum Cup, the feature race at the Virginia Fall Races at Middleburg on Oct. 14.

Upstate New York timber fans saw Charles Fenwick's Doc Cebu take the lead, give it up and then get it back again in the $30,000 Genesee Valley Hunt Cup.

Middleburg-based trainer Doug Fout and 2016 riding champion Kieran Norris teamed up with Worried Man to defeat seven rivals at Glenwood Park running the 3-1/4 miles in 6:48.00 over a 'good' course.

After missing the 2015 and 2016 racing seasons with injuries, Worried Man returned to the track this spring with a fourth place finish in the Mason Houghland Memorial on the Iroquois card at Nashville.

Jockey Norris scored his first win of the fall season after missing the summer races following a fall at Radnor in May.

Grand Manan, the pace setter until he was overtaken by Worried Man, finished second 3-1/2 lengths ahead of Straight to It.

Worried Man's victory was the second of the afternoon for Fout. He opened the day's activities with a win by Beverly R. (Peggy) Steinman's Reporter in the $20,000 Bon Nouvel Ratings Handicap.

Shane Crimin was aboard the 7-year-old gelding running the 2-1/8 miles over National Fences in 4:12.80 to score by 4-3/4 lengths over Able Archer. Bishop's Castle was third.

The win for Doc Cebu at Geneso was third of the 2017 timber season. He became eligible for a $50,000 bonus when he won Willowdale's timber feature in May.

Fenwick can collect that check with a win in the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup on Nov. 4.

Doc Cebu has banked $51,600 so far this season to get within striking distance of Irv Naylor's Ebanour who leads the timber toppers with $66,150 in purse earnings. Ebanour is nominated for the $50,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup on the Far Hills card on Oct. 21.

Doc Cebu and Hedden Frost had the lead for the first mile of the Genesee race before being headed by Class Indian and jockey Justin Batoff. Doc Cebu took the lead back when Class Indian went down at the 10th fence.

Class Brahms and Eric Poretz mounted a challenge to Doc Cebu passing the half mile pole. After repelling that rival, Doc Cebu crossed the line 11-1/4 lengths to the good of Sumo Power who was a head in front of Class Brahms.

Doc Cebu's win was the second of the afternoon for trainer Jack Fisher who is staging his own runaway to the top trainer title.

Bruton Street-US's Irish-bred Preseli Rock took the lead passing the half mile pole and stayed on for a 6-1/4 length win in the $15,000 maiden timber.

His time of 6 minutes flat for the three miles over a firm course established a course record.
