WESTFIELD, NJ — A 13-year-old girl was killed in Westfield Saturday night after she was struck by a service vehicle driven by an off-duty New Jersey State Police Trooper, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Sunday.

The girl’s name has not yet been released. She was reportedly a freshman at Westfield High School, playing a scavenger hunt game with friends when she was hit. 

Westfield School District Superintendent Margaret Dolan released a statement Sunday morning:

“Words cannot adequately describe the sorrow we feel upon the tragic loss last evening of one of our Westfield High School freshmen,” Dolan said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her loving family and friends. Our school counselors and administrative team will be on hand to provide support and help in any way we can.”

Westfield Police arrived at the intersection of Central Avenue and Wyoming Street at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday where, the prosecutor's office said, the teen was pronounced dead at the scene,

The investigation shut down that part of Central Avenue in both directions Saturday night.

An investigation into the crash is continuing, with the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, Union County Police Department and Westfield Police Department assisting.
