The U16 Boys Bloomfield Cheetahs took the opening match of the United States Club Soccer National Cup Championship Tournament 1-0 against a powerful GPS New Hampshire team in Westfield, Indiana today.
The heroes of the day were Anthony Rizzi who put in a Penalty kick with 25 minutes to go in a scoreless game, the Bloomfield defense that kept the powerful New Hampshire team at bay, and keeper Fernando Pesante who denied any scoring chances for the shut out. Coach John Ricca used most of his bench in a rotation to beat the high heat and humidity in Indiana. The game was delayed 2 hours because of thunderstorms.
"Bloomfield defeated a high quality and well coached team from Global Premier Soccer in New Hampshire," says Club President Barry Weiner. "They are a very strong squad, to beat a team like that you need to work every second of the game, no let downs."
Eight teams, 4 US Regional winners and 4 wild cards are competing in the final and biggest weekend of the 2016-2017 soccer season. The 8 teams make up two groups of 4 teams each. A round-robin of 3 games will put the 2 winning teams into the cup final on Monday.
Bloomfield qualified for the National Cup as one of the 4 wild cards. Bloomfield takes on the US Club Midwest Regional Champions the Chicago Alliance in the second game of three in the group play round, the game kicks off at 3pm Eastern Time and is covered at the Bloomfield Soccer Clubs Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/BloomfieldSoccerClub/
