The top priority of the 116th Congress must be to pass H.R.8, a bipartisan bill that would require background checks on all gun sales, including those from unlicensed dealers, gun shows, and online vendors.
The average American is 25 times more likely to be shot and killed by a firearm than in any other developed nation! This is simply unacceptable and absolutely preventable.
Unfortunately, loopholes in our current laws allow convicted felons, domestic abusers, and people with violent mental illnesses, to purchase firearms without a background check; no questions asked.
In 2017 alone, 170,000 firearm sales to those who couldn’t pass a background check were prevented, 39 percent of which would have been to convicted felons. Background checks are directly correlated to fewer firearm homicides, suicides, and trafficking.
A Pew Research Survey in 2018 indicated that Americans feel safer with background checks. This included overwhelming support from gun owners across the political spectrum.
Further, according to Preventative Medicine, Connecticut state laws requiring background checks on all gun sales led to an astounding 40% drop in gun homicides, and a 15% drop in unintentional gun deaths.
