To the Editors:

I was saddened to learn about the anti-Semitic comments made by James Harris at Councilwoman Baskerville's community forum on December 30.  Unfortunately, this was not the first time Mr. Harris has publicly made anti-Semitic remarks.

Two or three years ago, I attended an event at the firehouse on Pine Street hosted by Montclair Cares about Schools.  Mr. Harris at the time was speaking about Senator Cory Booker's support for charter schools. He said that Booker took courses in Jewish Studies while at Oxford because he was paving the way to secure donations from wealthy Jews for his political career.

At the time I spoke up and challenged Harris for invoking such pernicious anti-Semitic stereotypes, which are always appalling, but particularly shocking to hear from a purported civil rights leader.

It appears that Harris continues to use his position of public prominence to spread hate and bigotry.
