Evangelicalism and the Making of the American Mind

In the first decades of the 19th Century, the widespread tent revivals moved the focus of religion from dissecting creed to feeling the spirit. This “heart” over “head” response came to dominate all aspects of social discourse so that by the 1840s, a distinctive synthesis of evangelical Christianity, nationalism, and market capitalism had formed the basis of American exceptionalism.
