Liberty, Equality, Fraternity: Nationalism in 19th Century Europe

With its challenge to absolutism and aristocracy, the French Revolution awakened appetites for a host of radical ideas and Napoleon Bonaparte saw to it that these were spread to every corner of Europe. Under the twin banners of liberty and equality, the grand amorphous concept of the “nation” emerged and with it a disparate welter of views that ranged from the abolition of serfdom to universal suffrage, from constitutional monarchy to constitutional democracy, from a national identity based on language to one based on ethnicity.
