July 2, 2019

NEW JERSEY - Independence Day is on a Thursday this year and July 4 is a federal holiday, meaning all banks, government offices, the stock exchange and the United States Postal Service are closed. Day camps get the day off as do schools that are open ...

‘Shakespeare’s Long Lost Play’ Takes Audience to Giddy Heights

MADISON, NJ – Since this rambunctious production takes place outdoors, we’re not too concerned with subtleties or even Shakespearean language.

This farce, “William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (abridged),”  written by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor is directed with verve and no-holds-barred by Brian B. Crowe. Martin apparently has a talent for this ...

Fireworks on the Fourth of July is a Jersey First

As you watch the rockets glare and bombs burst into the New Jersey skies this weekend, share this little bit of Jerseyana with the people on the blanket or lawn chairs next to you.

The first “fireworks” display to celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence was ordered by George Washington himself along the banks of the Raritan River.

Yes, fireworks on the ...

Art Deco Buildings Turned Newark from Frankenstein Monster to Place of Refinement

The art deco movement in architecture came to Newark in a big way in the early years of The Depression, just as it did across the river.

Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, the Empire State and Chrysler buildings are all shining bronze and marble examples of the movement, and the grandeur and wealth of America.

The irony, of course, all were built in the early days of The ...

A Quick Primer to Jersey Shore Lingo

July 17, 2019

JERSEY SHORE – Those who live at the Jersey Shore year round speak a language of their own. Actually, it’s often a mix of dialects from other parts of Jersey, New York and those who come from the near west. Philadelphia, that is.

Most make a common distinction. They are not anything like the Jersey Shore cast whose drama captivates avid watchers throughout the United States. In ...

We Fixed What's Wrong at Our Essex County Correctional Facility

July 12, 2019

I can no longer sit idly by and allow the Star-Ledger to continue to smear my personal reputation and the reputation of the professional men and women of the Essex County Correctional Facility.

The constant editorials vilifying the work being done focus on an inspection from one year ago and ignore evidence repeatedly provided to the press that the concerns about the ECCF were addressed ...

Let Us Not Forget on This Fourth

Dear Editor,

As we pause to celebrate this Fourth of July as our independence of our country from England, I hope that we also respect those that helped to cause it to come about: The brave men who risked their lives to fight for and to create the great democracy we enjoy today. Men like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and many more.

These men - and men like ...
