NEWARK, NJ - A North Ward resident has his Ring doorbell to thank for helping catch an alleged package thief, police said.
Gilfredo Santiago, 41, was arrested in connection with the Jan. 14 theft after police identified him through the homeowner’s Ring Home Security system, authorities said. Ring is a video doorbell that comes with a cellphone app which can alert a homeowner when motion is detected.
Around 2:30 p.m., a North Ward homeowner received one of those motion notifications, altering him to someone on his porch. He saw a delivery person placing a package on the porch, according to police.
But about 10 minutes later, he received another motion detection. This time, it was allegedly a man removing his delivered package and walking away with it.
Police from the 2nd Precinct identified the suspect as Santiago. They later caught up with him near Mt. Prospect and Bloomfield avenues, where police say he was arrested without incident.
Santiago, of Newark, was charged with theft.
City police and Ring teamed up together last year for a giveaway of the video doorbells. Residents in the Weequahic and Forest Hill neighborhoods were able to apply for one free doorbell through a lottery.
