BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Italian American One Voice Coalition, a national organization dedicated to defending Italian Americans against bias and defending their heritage, is campaigning to save Columbus Day in Vermont. The group is based in Bloomfield NJ.
Adres DiMino, Communications Director of the organization, was a guest on WDEV Radio Vermont and the Gene Valicenti Show in Rhodes Island earlier Tuesday to discussthe state's plan to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day.
The Vermont legislature reently passed a bill that would change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day. The bill is waiting the governor's signature. Vermont has been celebrating Indigenous People's Day for years, the recent bill is a formality.
Alaska, Minnesota, Oregon and New Mexico no longer celebrate Columbus Day. Several cities across the United States have also removed Columbus from their calendar.
DiMino encourages supporters to send a letter to Vermont Governor Phil Scott to encourage him to not sign the bill. His letter reads:
Dear Governor Scott:
Please don't sign the bill changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples
Day. Columbus Day is a federal holiday which is celebrated by Italian
Americans honoring their heritage and culture. Eliminating Columbus Day
in favor of another ethnic holiday is discrimination and not necessary
to a compelling end. There is no legitimate government objective in
renaming our ethnic holiday in favor of another. We are equal or we are
Please honor Indigenous People on some other day and DO NOT discriminate
against Italian American by eliminating Columbus Day.
Thank you for your consideration,
DiMino suggests contacting the governor through the official website of the Vermont Governor.:
