HAWTHORNE, NJ - Lucille Ball might never have visited Hawthorne, but for environmentalists and bird watchers, another celebrity red-head has been spotted in the borough. Green Team member Holly Cowen reported seeing a Red Headed Woodpecker make its home in town and captured the majestic creature on film. She has graciously shared her pictures TAPinto Hawthorne.
"We have had a fairly uncommon bird in Hawthorne since mid December," Cowen said. "This is a Red Headed Woodpecker, not to be confused with the Red Belly. The Red Headed Woodpecker hangs out past the high school, heading towards Paterson, across the boulder wall by the river. He likes those trees back there. You may see him flying around looking for acorns. He has been here now five weeks--hope he sticks around."
Holly Cowen has shared her photos of local wildlife with TAPinto Hawthorne before, and has generated a considerable social media following among interested residents. "All the pictures were taken in our beautiful park," Cowen said.
The Hawthorne Environmental Commission and Green Team hosted a bird walk last year and are planning to host lectures at the Louis Bay 2nd Library in March. The Green Team also will be building on the success of the previous walks and organizing more, with details let to come.
