A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the grand opening of a new Emergency Department at Clara Maass Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility. The newly opened Emergency Department is a part of a larger renovation project at Clara Maass Medical Center that is underway and is slated to be complete by the end of the year.
The new Emergency Department will be served by a single new walk-in/drop-off entrance. The existing main entrance to the hospital’s Emergency Department has been redesigned, allowing for two separate and distinct waiting areas, one for pediatric patients and the other for general population emergency patients. A results-waiting room and discharge lounge has also been completed within the newly designed space to allow for better patient control and operational flow.
"We designed the new Emergency Department with our patients in mind because we want to ensure that they are calm and comfortable when they are with us,” said Mary Ellen Clyne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Clara Maass Medical Center. “Now, patients visiting the Emergency Department can look forward to spacious, modern waiting areas, which are separate for adults and for pediatrics, a discharge lounge for those who may be awaiting transportation or further instructions from our medical team, a new treatment room and a consultation room for private conversations for families with members of our health team. With these improvements, the nationally-recognized care available at Clara Maass Medical Center is now augmented by several wonderful conveniences that includes charging stations at every seat for use by our visitors and patients."
“We opened a new Emergency Department at Clara Maass Medical Center more than 20 years ago with 9 beds, 6 doctors and only 25,000 visits per year, and it is beyond incredible that today we’ve grown into a state-of-the-art facility with more than 40 practitioners, 34 beds and more than 80,000 patient visits annually,” said John Fontanetta, MD, Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Clara Maass Medical Center. “Our growth demonstrates that we are dedicated to serving the needs of the community in the best way possible.”
Renovations to the Emergency Department are continuing with an expansion to behavioral health and pediatric emergency services, which are slated to open this fall.
The hospital began the renovations with the addition of a new, state-of-the-art 87,000 square foot Medical Office Building with a new main entrance and lobby, retail pharmacy with concierge services, patient registration area and an ICU featuring 32 private rooms, an Intensivist program offering advanced care for those who are critically ill and an enhanced physician office space to increase ease of access for patients, which opened in 2017. In 2018, the facility also added an Adult Observation unit and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit for patients not well enough to return home, but who still require observation.
