Bloomfield, NJ- At approximately 6:43 p.m. on January 23, 2020, officers responded to Fontaine Avenue on report of a Carjacking that just occurred. Police units responded to the address and spoke with the female victim who parked her vehicle in her driveway, exited the vehicle and observed four individuals walking towards her. One of the individuals approached her from behind and demanded all her belongings and grabbed the keys to her vehicle. The four individuals then entered her vehicle, a grey Toyota RAV 4, and fled the scene. The vehicle was entered NCIC stolen and a Felony Vehicle.

Bloomfield Detectives also responded and tracked the victim’s cell phone in the area of Route 280 in East Orange. The signal was then lost a short time later. Detectives investigated and collected video evidence that captured the incident. They obtained a picture of the suspect, later to be identified as Naszir Mitchel age 20 of Hillside, NJ from the video footage collected. This information was disseminated statewide.

On January 26, 2020 Mitchell was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Carjacking; 2nd Degree Robbery; 1st Degree Conspiracy to Commit Carjacking; and 2nd Degree Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Mitchell was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility. “When neighboring Police Departments work together we are able to solve more cases quicker, bringing closure to victims and keeping our neighborhoods safe. I would like to thank Newark Police Department and Bloomfield Police Department Detective Bureau for their collaborative efforts which led to the apprehension and arrest of one of the suspects involved in this incident” said Bloomfield Public Safety Director Samuel DeMaio.
