Bloomfield, NJ-On December 22, 2019 Bloomfield Police Officers were dispatched to 48 West Passaic Avenue (John’s Deli) on a commercial burglar alarm. When the officers arrived, they observed the front glass door of the business smashed. The officers entered the store and observed an open cash register on the ground with coins surrounding it. They also observed a rock inside the store that was used to break the window. The building was cleared and there were no suspect(s) located inside. After speaking with the owner, approximately $200 in cash was taken from the register.
As officers were checking the perimeter of the building, they observed damage to the front door of another business, 42 West Passaic Avenue (Prissy Paws). They entered the store in search of any suspect(s) and observed the business ransacked. The building was cleared and there were no suspect(s) located inside. After speaking with the owner, it was determined that approximately $100 was taken from the cash register. Bloomfield PD Crime Scene Unit responded to both locations to process the scene for evidence.
After these incidents, officers were deployed to the area to search for any suspect(s) in connection with the burglaries. Officer G. Capito & Officer Noel, observed an African American male wearing a black jacket and black sweatpants walking south on Broad Street in front of Brookside Tavern (1099 Broad St) and continued to walk towards Watchung Avenue. When the male observed the officer's presence, he hid behind a trailer at 1079 Broad Street and fled the area on foot.
Officers pursued the suspect but lost him in the area of Broad Street and Holly Court.
While checking the area for the suspects, Sergeant Bambera observed a taxi turn into the IHOP parking lot located at 1129 Broad St. Lt. Argento observed this taxi and conducted a motor vehicle stop at Watchung Avenue & Clair Street. As the taxi pulled over for the marked patrol car, Lt. Argento observed an African American male who fit the description of the suspect exit the taxi and run towards Clair St.
Officers responded to the area and received information from a resident that someone was in their back yard on George Street. Officer Joseph observed the suspect running through back yards and jumping fences. He relayed this information to other officers. Officer Horn and Officer Davis pursued the suspect and arrested him after a foot pursuit. The suspect was identified as Vontra Marrow, Age 24 of Newark, NJ.
At approximately 0530 hours on December 23, 2019 Officers responded to 1129 Broad Street (Bagels Abroad) on another report of a burglary. The video footage revealed the suspect to be Vontra Marrow. The proceeds are approximately $500 from the tip jar at Bagels Abroad. After investigating further and reviewing video footage, the suspect used a stolen bread truck out of North Bergen as his get- away vehicle. This vehicle was located on Donna Drive and towed to HQ to be processed. He was charged with the following:
Vontra Marrow was charged with 3 counts of Burglary, 3 counts of Theft, 3 counts of Criminal Mischief, 1 count of Receiving Stolen Property, 1 count of Obstructing Administration of a Law Enforcement Officer and 1 count of Resisting Arrest. He is awaiting transportation to Essex County Correctional Facility and has a pending court date for the charges.
