BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Crews from the Bloomfield Fire Department responded to a house fire on Watchung Ave. on Saturday May 25. The call came into the deparment at about 11:35 a.m.
Units from Montclair, Nutley and Belleville arrived on the scene to provide assistance and support for Bloomfield.
The fire took place at 515 Watchung Ave, just past Emerson Terrace if driving from Broad St. toward Glen Ridge. There are no reports of injuries.
Neighbors in the area questioned why thee were so many fire fighters at the scene. It was explained by one of the first responders that thee were three reasons to have additional crew standing by. The first reason was in the event that additional fire fighters were needed to extinguish the fire. The second reason was to relieve crews in the event of a prolonged fire. With the heat of the fire there is a real risk of heat exhaustion. The third reason would be to rescue the fire crew should there be a roof or partial structure collapse. In home fires, there is always the chance that fire will travel between walls, under floors, and even between the ceiling and floor or roof above.
With home fires, especially in wood structure homes, the intensity of the fire, and need for additional crews is not fully known until fire fighters get into the structure and start to knock down the fire.
