UPDATE: According to Montclair Police officials, despite earlier conflicting reports, "there was no weapon or credible threat to the school community."
MONTCLAIR, NJ - Montclair High School parents took to social media after learning of a possible safety threat Tuesday. Apparently, this came after school officials alerted parents that there was a possible threat of safety and security at Montclair High School.
According to reports, several students reported to administration that a student intended to harm other students. Parents have reported that their children are afraid and wish to stay home. This comes on the heels of a massive brawl outside of Ruthie's several days ago. There is no evidence that any of these incidents are connected.
According to police officials, who took to social media to dispel rumors, misinformation has been shared on social media and there had been no prior reports of threatening behavior involving the student.
In light of these recent possible threats, the concerns for student safety are at the forefront of the minds of parents and students, students have stated.
The administration wrote, in a letter to parents that they are assessing the validity of the threat and have determined, "There is no immediate danger to students or staff."
Police Officials also sent a letter to the community on Wednesday stating the following:
"On May 7, 2019, members of the Montclair High School and the School Resource Officer learned of a possible threat circulating on social media. Detectives are currently conducting an active investigation with the cooperation of the involved student and his family. Preliminary investigation has determined that there was no weapon readily available, nor credible threat to the school community. Contrary to misinformation that has been shared on social media, there have been no prior reports of threatening behavior concerning the involved student. No further information is available at this time."
The following letter was sent to parents by school officials:
