BLOOMFIELD, NJ-- At approximately 840 AM this morning Bloomfield Animal Control Officer Melissa Johnson and Bloomfield Animal Shelter manager Jaclyn Mendyk and responded to a report of a dog stranded in the middle of the shallow brook behind Pine Street. The brook is a part of the Second River, a tributary of the Passaic River.
Due to inaccessibility, Animal Control called for the Bloomfield Fire Department to help out. The fire department was able to utilize a ground ladder in order to get down to the brook from a Pine Street backyard. Once the firefighters waded through the water, the scared and cold dog showed no resistance to the rescuers bringing him to safety.
The dog displayed frozen ears and was taken to a local veterinarian with an initial diagnosis of hypothermia. He is expected to make a full recovery.
