BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The community came together for a good cause as the 30th Annual Ted Jasieniecki Alumni Basketball Game took place Friday evening at Bloomfield High School.
Proceeds from the annual benefit go towards the Theodore Jasieniecki Scholarship Fund. Tickets were sold for the exhibition, t-shirts and snacks were on-sale, and fees were collected to participate in the game.
“This is one of the longest running alumni basketball games in the State of New Jersey,” said Bloomfield Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Director Michael Sceurman. “All the proceeds from this event go towards an annual scholarship where a senior female and male student-athlete basketball player receives a $4,000 scholarship towards their higher education.”
Fifteen BHS alumni members participated in the game that featured good-natured ribbing and less-than-stellar athletics.
Bengals Boys Basketball Coach Michael Passero was in attendance courtside – jokingly stating he was ready to administer medical attention to any players who might lose their breath running up and down the court.
Before the main event, the 6th grade girls from Brookdale School took on their counterparts from Demarest, while the 6th grade coed teams from Watsessing and Fairview Schools faced off.
“Since this game began in 1987, we have raised and awarded over $125,000 in scholarships,” Sceurman said. “Over the 20 years of the Bloomfield Educational Foundation, as this is our 20th
anniversary, we have donated over $1 million back to the Bloomfield Public School system, so we thank you for your support.”
After the game, a reception was held at Town Pub for alumni game players and attendees.
“The next event that we have going on is the Bloomfield Educational Foundation Annual Gala on Friday, May 3 at Forest Hills Field Club featuring the Bloomfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame,” added Sceurman. “We have seven inductees going into the Hall of Fame.”
