BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The fundamentals of baseball are a dying art, but the solid foundation needed to be a successful ballplayer is the key message at the 13th annual Bloomfield Bengals Baseball Summer Camp.
The camp, under the direction of Bloomfield Boys Varsity Head Coach Mike Policastro, is in it’s first of three weeks at the Bloomfield Middle School field complex for kids ages 7 to 15.
Provided to the youngsters is detailed baseball instruction in all phases of the game, from bunting and baserunning, to catching and pitching mechanics.
“The kids are listening to the coaches and hopefully learning as much as possible,” Coach Policastro told TAP. “We want them to learn from our different coaches, but most of all, have fun.”
Campers also get a complete evaluation at weeks end, participate in daily games and challenges, and receive a free T-shirt, awards and prizes.
In addition to Policastro, staff members include BHS Assistant Coach Mike Aldiero, Don Bosco Prep Assistant Coach Mike Chiaravalloti, Glen Ridge Head Coach Liam Penberthy and Glen Ridge Assistant Coach John McAndrew.
Current and former Bengals players also help with the kids on the diamond and in the batting cage.
“You always have to work hard to be good in baseball, because no matter how hard you work, the offensive side of baseball will always have more failure than succession,” Policastro added.
Week two is next Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26, and week three is Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 2. For registration information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
