WEST ORANGE, NJ-- As the wrestling season has ended for New Jersey High schools, the individual competition is just heating up. Last Saturday, wrestlers from each weight class competed in one of 32 districts statewide. The top 3 in each weight class move on to one of 8 Region tournaments, each comprised of 4 districts.
Tonight is the opening night of Regions. It's make or break for anyone on the mat as a loss means your season is over. A win gets you to day 2 of the tournament on Friday night. At that point it becomes double elimination. Bloomfield will be competing in Region 3 at West Orange High School.
The Region consists of wrestlers from Bloomfield, Livingston, Orange, Secaucus, Newark Academy, Glen Ridge, Delbarton, North Bergen, Nutley, Hanover Park, Randolph, Verona, Irvington, Lyndhurst, Columbia, Belleville, Cliffside Park, Chatham, Mendham, Caldwell, Hackettstown, Kearny, Whippany Park, Montclair, Morristown, Morris Catholic, Wood-Ridge, East Orange, West Morris, Warren Hills, West Orange, Belvidere, Becton, Madison, Union City, East Side, Rutherford and Barringer.
Bloomfield is represented in 4 different weight classes in Region 3.
Gerald VanBaelen 120 lbs
Ramin B-Razavi 132 lbs
D`Isaiah Larrea 145 lbs
Zachary Andruchowitz 182 lbs
All will be wrestling tonight except for Andruchowitz who won the 182 lb title in his district and received a bye until Friday's action. Andruchowitz not only won his weight class but was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in District 9. This is attained through a voting process in which opposing coaches each select the wrestler that they believed outperformed all others. During the District tournament an award was also given to the assistant coach of the year. Bloomfield's Coach Galioto was the recipient of this award.
In each Region, the top 4 wrestlers will advance to the New Jersey State High School Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on 3/5-3/7.
