BLOOMFIELD, NJ – It didn’t take long for the top-seeded Bloomfield Bengals to dispose of 16th seed Newark West Side in the first-round of the Essex County Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at Bloomfield High School.

It took less than 30 minutes for the Bengals to sweep the Rough Riders 2-0 (25-10 and 25-11) on their home court.

Senior Christian Voicu led Bloomfield with 8 kills.  Senior Rocco Iacovone set the table for the Bengals with a game-high 19 assists.  Junior Matthew Fong had 13 digs.

The Bengals stand at 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the Super Essex Conference American Division, good for first place.

With Bloomfield leading the SEC American Division standings, Livingston trails at 11-9 overall and 6-2 in the division, followed by Payne Tech at 17-7 overall and 4-4 in the division.

The Bengals now host West Essex Regional High School in the ECT Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 4:00 pm at Bloomfield High School.  8th seed West Essex defeated 9th seed West Orange 2-0 on Saturday to advance.

If the Bengals win, they advance to the ECT Semifinals on Thursday May 16, 5:00 pm at Livingston High School.

The ECT Championship Game is this Saturday, May 18, 1:00 pm at Bloomfield High School.

Bloomfield High School also hosts the NJSIAA Tournament next week on Tuesday, May 21, 4:00 pm.
