BLOOMFIELD, NJ--Another season is about to begin on the hardwood at Bloomfield High for the boys varsity team. The boys are also looking forward to a good season. Second-year head coach Mike Passero saw his young team finish 12-13 last season, en route to qualifying for the state tournament. Two years earlier, the team had won a state sectional title for the first time in 40 years.
Bloomfield will open its regular season on Dec. 19, when Barringer visits in a 7 p.m. start. On Dec. 21, the Bengals stay home to play Science Park, at noon. On Dec. 27 and 28, the team will host a holiday tournament and will play People's Prep, in the first round, at 7 p.m. The championship and consolation games will be on Dec. 28. Bloomfield's first round game won't be until Jan. 7, at Irvington, in a 4 p.m. tip.
The team captains are seniors Vinny Torrisi and Patrick Liggins and junior Vernon Lee.
"We're a young group, with two returning varsity players in Torrisi and Lee," said Passero. "We are excited about some of our young kids. A lot will depend on how they develop."
Other players expected to contribute are senior Brandon Estelle, juniors Khanye Tucker, Andre Dean and Chino Anyanwu, along with sophomores Isaiah Cortes, Ram Gotrasse and Uma Kalu.
"They're hard-working and good kids who will continue to get better as the season progresses," the coach said.
