MANSFIELD, NJ — What better way to celebrate the re-opening of modern society, than to attend an outdoor, local Renaissance Faire that incorporates social responsibility into its theme?
The New Jersey Renaissance Faire (NJRF) will be holding court at Liberty Lake Day Camp on Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30 and Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6, from 10AM to 6PM, as it transforms the grounds into the magical village of Crossford.
Seven action-packed hours of interactive entertainment await, including knight jousts, sword fighting, fire breathing, aerialists, comedy, music and more. Enjoy extensive shopping in the eclectic Merchant Village of fine artisans and eat a wide variety of faire-food, including the ever popular turkey "dragon" legs. Local craft breweries Spellbound and Third State will be there, as well as Valenzano Wines and the South Jersey Celtic Society Meade Garden.
Special attractions include Shelli Buttons, William Shakespeare himself, Chaste Treasure and the swashbuckling Lords of Adventure. Formed by NJRF founders, TJ Miller and John Williams, The Lords of Adventure have become one of the hottest Renaissance Faire acts across the country, performing regularly at faires throughout North America- even during 2020 and 2021.
TJ, who goes by the moniker “Roger Awesome” grew up in New Egypt and is a graduate of Allentown High School and Rutgers University. A true “Renaissance Man,” he is an accomplished performer in the realms of theater, fight choreography, and music, and is a master teacher of martial art of Jeet Kune Do. "It was basically MMA before MMA was cool, blending a variety of styles. I tend to focus on boxing, Thai boxing, Filipino Martial arts and grappling. It is really about honestly expressing yourself as an individual and helping students achieve that," says TJ.
In February 2020, TJ opened up his own Dojo in downtown Mount Holly, the Ludus Academy of Martial Arts. "When people ask my advice about opening a Dojo, I say ‘try not to do it one month before a global pandemic.'" Fighting through the challenges, Ludus offered online classes at first, and then has been slowly reopening ever since, with small classes and protocols to keep students safe and healthy. One of the biggest draws of the Ludus is circus aerialist, Shelli Buttons, who can kick and punch with the best of them, when necessary!
