New Jersey Date Night is a series on NJ Flavor by relationship writer Craig Rogers.
We’re trading our flip flops for boots and our shorts for sweatshirts. Picnic dates on the shore might be coming to an end but one seaside dish that never goes out of season is lobster.
Baked, broiled or served chilled, the ever-popular crustacean makes for a great meal on your next date night. Luckily, New Jersey chefs have perfected their preparation of this delicacy of the sea, serving lobster up all year long.
Get ready for a New Jersey Date Night filled with shellfish motives!
Jack’s Lobster Shack in both Edgewater and Cresskill does an amazing job of providing an experience that will make your think your date night is in Maine. The vibe of both locations screams Northeast Coastal and the icing on the cake is choosing your own lobster! Ranging from 1.5 to 4 pounds, the lobsters are steamed to perfection and served with corn on the cob, coleslaw and lots of drawn butter.
Don’t forget to order an appetizer, such as the peel-and-eat shrimp with Old Bay seasoning, fried clams or mussels in white wine sauce. Be sure to save room for dessert, as you won’t want to miss a piece of their homemade pies.

That’s How We Roll
Lobster rolls are iconic and thanks to Quincy’s Original Lobster Rolls you’ll be rolling with the best of them! They have locations in Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Wildwood and two in Cape May.
You and your date will be blown away by their classic lobster roll with mayonnaise, lemon butter and seasonings. If you’re watching your carbs, the carb-less lobster roll gives you all the flavor sandwiched in crispy romaine. Or mix things up with a bowl of Quincy’s lobster bisque or their lobster grilled cheese.

Lob-stirring the Pot
H2ocean in Cedar Knolls offers an amazing “Lobster Mania” dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays featuring your choice of twin lobster tails or a 1 ¼-pound whole lobster served with vegetables, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and your choice of dessert.
Another option for your date night is to do a little work yourself and take home their crab bake pot. All you have to do is turn up the heat on their expertly prepared meal of whole lobster, shrimp, little neck clams, corn on the cob and Yukon Gold potatoes and serve with a side of house-made coleslaw.

Enjoying a quintessential lobster dinner is an option at Red’s Lobster Pot in Point Pleasant, but the other lobster dishes might just tempt you and your date. Perhaps lobster fra diavolo with their signature sweet marinara sauce or maybe lobster ravioli in a pink vodka sauce will strike your fancies. With lobster mac & cheese on the menu as well, you’ve got some serious decisions to make!
One decision you’ll have no challenge making is the chocolate peanut butter pie for dessert.

You’re my Lobster
The term “You’re my Lobster” is based on a fallacy that lobsters mate for life. The mating rituals of the lobster are indeed interesting but monogamy in the crustacean world doesn’t exit.
In spite of the misconception, telling someone you love that they’re your lobster isn’t exactly off track. Lobsters aren’t the easiest to catch, but well worth the wait. A lobster sometimes shows their claws but in the big picture you love them anyway. And the lobster’s outer shell is sometimes a tough nut to crack, but with perseverance we can break through the protective wall to reach the softness.
Enjoying and appreciating a lobster requires work and determination and relationships are no different. Calling someone “My Lobster” might just be the best compliment of all.
