BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Somerset County has provided a new update on the roadwork on Washington Valley Road, with bridge replacement work west of Van Nest Drive to be done next.

According to a report, the bridge replacement work on Washington Valley Road was set to begin Aug. 22, requiring the full closure of the roadway with concrete barriers.

Stage 2 work west of Van Nest Drive to Chimney Rock Road is continuing, as is work at the intersection of Chimney Rock Road. According to the county, this stage of work is broken into two parts for bridge replacement near 2025 Washington Valley Road.

To do this work, which began Thursday, the county must close the entire roadway to remove the existing bridge and replace it with a new concrete box culvert.

The report said that the only change related to this work is that concrete barricades will be placed around the bridge excavation, and they cannot be opened for emergency services. Local police and emergency services agencies have been notified about this new status.

Residents living east of the bridge site will continue to access their properties from Laurel Trail and Vosseller Avenue, and those residents and businesses west of the bridge site will still be able to access their properties from the Chimney Rock Road intersection until the bridge work is complete in late September.

When the new bridge is installed, the full barricade will be relocated to the west, near 1997 Washington Valley Road.

The work is anticipated to be finished, with the road fully re-opening, in mid October.

According to the report, the county is continuing to coordinate with the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Transportation Department for modified bus routes in the new school year. Buses will not be allowed to pass the full barricades on Washington Valley Road, but they will be able to access the work zone via the local connection streets, including Vosseller Avenue, Laurel Trail and Eastbrook Road.
