BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Middlebrook Encampment was the site of the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence in honor of the 241st birthday of the United States July 4.

The flag was raised and the colors were retired by the American Legion Giles-Biondi Post 63, Bound Brook, AMVETS Post 16 of Bridgewater and the VFW Post 6588 of Martinsville. The presentation of colors was made by Boy Scout troops 41 and 46.

In addition, the Declaration of Independence was read by Michael Kerwin, president of the Somerset County Business Partnership, and Herb Patullo gave the historic reflection to honor the service of Kels Swan.

Finally, American Citizenship Awards were presented to Avani Patwardhan, of Eisenhower Intermediate; Evan Gilmurray, of Eisenhower Intermediate; Paige Brotschul, of Hillside Intermediate; Sakinah Ahmed, of Hillside Intermediate; Jerel Fields, of Robert Morris in Bound Brook; Abby Morita, of Robert Morris in Bound Brook; Harnoor Singh, of Smalley Elementary in Bound Brook; and Shileah Huggins, of Smalley Elementary in Bound Brook.
