BRIDGEWATER, NJ - A 22-year-old Bridgewater man was killed in a motor vehicle crash that set the car on fire Monday evening on Garretson Road, according to a report from Bridgewater Township Police.

According to police, the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team were called to investigate a single car motor vehicle crash at 9:36 p.m. Monday on Garretson Road near the intersection of Hill Lane.

The car, police said, left the roadway, struck a tree and then became engulfed in flames. Members of the Green Knoll Fire Department and the North Branch Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire, while members of the Green Knoll Rescue Squad and the Martinsville Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.

At the time of the crash, the driver of the vehicle was not identified. With the assistance of the Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office, he was identified as 22-year-old Brian Conklin.

Conklin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed, but preliminary findings indicate Conklin was driving at an excessive speed, police said.
