BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The driver of a Nissan Maxima was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident on Route 22 West Wednesday evening that shut down lanes near North Gaston Avenue for several hours.

According to a release from the Bridgewater Township Police Department, the Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the crash that occurred near the Bank of America on Route 22 West and was reported around 4:55 p.m.

The release said the Nissan struck a Volkswagon Jetta, which was on the right shoulder of Route 22 West. The driver of the Nissan, also the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Somerset, where she died from her injuries.

According to the release, the driver of the Jetta, also the sole occupant of that car, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Somerset and treated for minor injuries.

Bridgewater Township Police have not released the names of the parties involved, pending notification to immediate family.

Assisting in the crash were the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office CAR Team, Green Knoll/North Branch Fire Departments, Martinsville/Green Knoll Rescue Squads, Robert Wood Johnson Somerset Rescue Squad, Robert Wood Johnson Somerset Paramedics and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The crash is currently being investigated by Bridgewater Township Police Officer Doug Thorsen. Witnesses are being asked to call 908-722-4111, ext. 4154.
