Classic Car Owners Park Their Rides in Downtown Somerville Friday Nights

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Visit downtown Somerville any Friday night during the summer and you’ll swear you’re stuck in a time warp.

Main Street looks like a set for any of the classic ‘50s and ‘60s TV shows and Hollywood movies – “Grease,” “Hollywood Nights,” “Laverne & Shirley,” “Magic City,” “American Graffitti,” and a number of others that all celebrate America’s fixation with chrome, fins, big block engines, rag tops, rumble seats, wooden spoke tires – and fuzzy dice.

American iron prevails from Memorial Day to Labor Day, as these sweet rides rumble and glide into town to park along the curb on Main Street, drawing crowds in the thousands. These cars are all classics – antiques, customized, hot rods, convertibles and pick-ups.

Tonight kicks off Somerville’s annual Friday Night Cruise Night series, a nationally-acclaimed show that continues to grow in popularity more than 25 years after the gathering first took place.

Cars begin to park along the street early afternoon, and by 6 p.m. the cars are parked bumper-to-bumper along both sides of Main Street. Their owners drop the hoods, fire up the engines and head home as it begins to get dark.

These cars are all classics – antiques, customized, hot rods, convertibles and pick-ups.

The weekly event is sponsored by the Downtown Somerville Alliance and Fullerton Auto Group.
