BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Township posted an update to its website regarding construction of the groundwater treatment facility at the American Cyanamid Superfund site in the Finderne section of town, and noted that a public information session is planned for late 2017 or early 2018.

Throughout the month of June, the release said, there was an increase in construction activities on the site off East Main Street to build a groundwater treatment facility and address groundwater contamination at the site. The design was approved in March 2017 by the Environmental Protection Agency, and preliminary work began in April.

Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2018.

The cleanup, the release said, is designed to capture contaminated groundwater and restore it to concentrations below state and federal standards.

There are three main components of the cleanup, namely the facility; an extraction and injection system that removes the contaminated groundwater and reinfects it back after being cleaned; and a hydraulic barrier wall to control the movement of groundwater.

According to the release, impoundments 1 and 2 were not includes in the cleanup because of additional contamination issues with the site. The impoundments are about 2 acres in size in the southeast area of the site.

A focused feasibility study is underway for those, and is designed to consider and field test various cleanup technologies.

That study, the release said, is in the latter stages of completion, and is expected to be done in fall 2017.

The EPA, the release said, is planning to hold a public information session in late 2017 or early 2018 to discuss the progress on the groundwater and site-wide soil portions of the cleanup and provide possible updates for work on impoundments 1 and 2.
