BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Township Police reported that an employee at the Finderne CVS Pharmacy stopped a customer who was targeted in an IRS scam.
According to the report from police, an employee at the CVS saw an elderly female customer purchasing a gift card order to send to an IRS scammer. The scammer, police said, was on the customer's phone at the time, and was telling the victim that they owed more than $8,000.
The scammer, police said, told the victim to use an Apple gift card to satisfy the debt.
Bridgewater Township Police officers responded to the store and spoke to the scammer on the victim's phone, and they immediately hung up.
The IRS will not contact people by phone, police said, so people should not fall for threats of arrest over the phone.
